guessing game

so dennis was doing his usual used book shopping and he brought home a poetry book.   we found a couple of poems that were particularly interesting.   i want you to guess  the author of these two poems if you can.

EBLA

From those ancient ruins rise
Records
Heaped with dust and sand
Of long buried civilizations
Abiding still to tell the story
Centuries spent in silent waiting
Mute sentinel
Now unearthed to bear a witness
Speaking out
Truth telling tablets
Marked with aged stylus
Slept through soporific climate
Rested
Now reveal their secrets
Relic of Levantine antiquity

and here's the second one:

         DESERT LAKE

They know its there
   If not by instinct
      Then by fact that
          Shining, glistening source of life
              Is spread before them
                 It covers dry, parched
                    Patch of earth
Refuge in the long flight to
                          Northmost parts
                              Here graceful Egret, majestic Goose
                                  Blue Heron and multi-colored Duck
                                       Pause in flight
To rest - feed - be social
                                                  Their noisy raucous communication
                                                      Passing information of recent events
                                                            A touch of happiness
                                                                   Reviving

leave a comment if you think you know who wrote these.

I have no idea who wrote either one of these poems, but the word ebla sounds ancient to me. So maybe it is a very old poem that was translated. Is there such a thing as ancient poetry? Glad to see you posting. I am in need of your knitting expertise.

I am thinking they must be poets that we know otherwise why would you ask. I am thinking that Robert Frost wrote the first one and Lord Byron wrote the first. I have no idea really. Just trying to remember my poets.

I mean Robert Frost wrote the second one or maybe it is Robert Browning. Oh it's all a guess anyway.

I'm not looking at anyone elses comments until after I post my own because I don't want to be influenced by someone else. My first guess is Eliza R. snow, because she was a well known poetess, and my second guess would be W.W. Phelps. I l really liked the poems, the first one especially. Now I have to read them again. And ponder them.

Interesting that you post this, in our Mesopotamia unit in sixth grade we just learned a little bit about Ebla, it was a video documentary of excavators in Ebla. I don't think the site was even found until the 1960's so the poem wouldn't have been able to be written until after that. I'm going to say David O. McKay, since Dennis is partial to Church books, and I think he was the Prophet at the time ha...

The other one I don't know, I'll say Sir Walter Scott, even though he wouldn't be in a church book..

I also think it could be Montell Seely..

Desert Lake is over by Cleveland and Elmo on the way to the quarry. When Tennyson was in elementary school we went on a field trip there. It is a bird refuge now. The lake was made by the settlers of the town called Desert Lake, which is now a ghost town. I'm guessing the poem is by someone from around here.

After reading Miranda and Jennifer's comments, I suspect that the poems were written by someone we might know. Then again I thought maybe Hugh Nibley, although why he would write a poem about Deset Lake in Emery Co. I don't know.

When are you going to tell us?

If I recall correctly they were written in 1964 but I don't know who wrote them. It would be funny if grandpa Fuller wrote them, he would have been 25ish. On the other hand I don't really think that so, my other wild guess would be Bruce r mcconkie because he wrote poetry.
